What Is AI Visibility? How to Measure and Improve It
AI visibility is how well AI assistants find, understand, cite and recommend your business. Learn the four layers, key metrics and a 30-day plan.
On this page
AI visibility is how well AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews can find your business, understand what it is, cite sources about it and recommend it when people ask. You measure it by asking those engines the questions your customers ask and tracking mentions, share of voice, citations and accuracy. You improve it by fixing access, facts, content and third-party coverage.
What does AI visibility actually mean?
Traditional search visibility is about where your pages rank. AI search visibility is about whether your brand appears inside a written answer. When someone in London asks “Which bookkeeping firms are good for freelancers?” or someone in Lahore asks “Best IELTS coaching near Gulberg”, the assistant names a few businesses and often lists its sources. Brand visibility in AI is your presence in those answers, and whether what the answer says about you is true.
It is closely related to generative engine optimization (GEO): AI visibility is the outcome, GEO is the work you do to improve it. For how these terms relate to SEO, see GEO vs SEO vs AEO.
What are the four layers of AI visibility?
It helps to think of AI visibility as four layers. Each one depends on the layer before it.
1. Found
Can AI search crawlers reach your website? ChatGPT search relies on OAI-SearchBot, Claude on Claude-SearchBot, Perplexity on PerplexityBot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode on Googlebot, and Copilot on Bing’s Bingbot. If your robots.txt, firewall or CDN blocks them, you are invisible at the first step. Note that blocking training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, CCBot) does not remove you from AI search answers; blocking the search crawlers does. See how to allow AI crawlers.
2. Understood
Does the engine know who you are? It needs to connect your name to one clear business: what you do, where, for whom, and how to contact you. Inconsistent names, addresses or phone numbers across your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and directories make that harder. Schema.org markup (Organization or a LocalBusiness subtype, with sameAs, address, telephone and areaServed) helps, as long as it matches the visible page. 3. Cited
Are your pages, or pages about you, used as sources? Engines that search the web retrieve pages and cite them. Pages with direct answers, specific facts and clear structure are easier to use. Third-party pages count too: a directory listing or a “best of” article that mentions you can be the citation that puts you in the answer. See how to write content AI cites and which websites ChatGPT cites.
4. Recommended
Are you named when people ask for options? This is the layer most owners care about, and it depends on the three below it plus how widely other sources support you. No one can guarantee a recommendation. You can only improve the odds and measure them.
How do you measure AI visibility?
Start with a list of real customer questions: category questions (“best family lawyer in Dubai”), comparison questions (“X vs Y for small teams”), problem questions (“how do I fix a leaking tap”) and brand questions (“What is [your business]?”). Then track four metrics.
| Metric | What it tells you | How to track it |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | How often you are named for a question | Ask the same question several times and count answers that mention you |
| Share of voice | How often you are named compared with competitors | Count mentions of each brand across your question set |
| Citations | Which pages engines rely on, and whether they mention you | Record every cited URL and check it for your name and competitors’ |
| Accuracy | Whether AI states your facts correctly | Compare answers to brand questions against your real phone, website, address and services |
A few rules keep measurement honest:
- Repeat, don’t screenshot. Answers vary by engine, wording, location, time and personalisation. One answer is an anecdote; a rate across repeated runs is a signal.
- Keep the question set fixed. Changing wording each month makes trends meaningless.
- Measure each engine separately. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude can give very different answers.
- Remember the API gap. Answers collected through an API can differ from what a customer sees in the consumer app.
Detailed how-tos: tracking brand mentions, AI share of voice and measuring AI visibility improvements.
What can an AI visibility score tell you, and what can’t it?
Many tools roll these signals into a single AI visibility score. A score is useful as a summary, but read it with care.
A score can tell you:
- Whether you are broadly visible, partly visible or missing.
- Which layer is weakest: access, entity facts, citations or mentions.
- Whether things are moving in the right direction when measured the same way over time.
A score can’t tell you:
- Exactly what every customer sees. Personalised and location-specific answers are not fully observable.
- How an engine ranks sources. No AI company publishes its ranking formula, so any score is an outside estimate.
- Whether visibility turns into revenue. Pair it with your own enquiry and sales data.
Treat two scores from different tools as different measurements, not as competing truths. What matters is the trend from one consistent method and the specific gaps it points to.
A 30-day plan to improve AI visibility
Week 1: Baseline and access
- Write 10 to 20 customer questions, including two or three brand questions. Our prompt research guide helps.
- Ask each question in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. Record whether you are named, which competitors are, and which pages are cited.
- Check robots.txt and firewall rules so AI search crawlers are allowed.
Week 2: Facts and entity
- Make your business name, address, phone, website and hours identical across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and key directories.
- Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema that matches the visible page (see this schema guide).
- If AI answers contain wrong facts about you, trace the cited sources and correct them. See fixing wrong information in ChatGPT.
Week 3: Citable content
- Rewrite your homepage and main service pages to open with a direct, factual answer about what you do and where.
- Add a short FAQ to each key page, written as self-contained answers (FAQ guide).
- Create or improve one page per location or core service if you serve several.
Week 4: Corroboration and re-check
- Review the pages cited in week 1. Where competitors are mentioned and you aren’t, find out how to get listed or included.
- Claim or update profiles on relevant directories and review sites (citation sources guide).
- Re-run your question set exactly as before and compare. Expect some changes to take longer, since engines need to re-read updated pages and sources.
Then keep the cycle going monthly. If you are not appearing anywhere yet, why ChatGPT is not mentioning your business is a good next read.
How Onxeera helps
Onxeera’s AI Visibility Checker audits your brand across AI engines and gives you a GEO score as a starting baseline. Prompt Research asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude your customer questions via their official APIs with web search on, and stores answers, brands mentioned, order and cited sources; it shows a mention rate only after at least three answers, so one-off results don’t mislead you. AI Reputation flags wrong phone numbers, websites, emails or founding years against your Brand Knowledge profile, with the quote and cited sources. You can start on the free plan; see pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI visibility the same as SEO ranking?
No. SEO ranking measures where a page appears in a list of search results. AI visibility measures whether your brand is named, described correctly and supported by sources inside an AI-written answer. Good SEO helps AI visibility, but a business can rank well and still be missing from AI answers, or the reverse.
How often should I check my AI visibility?
Monthly suits most small businesses, using the same fixed set of questions each time. Weekly checks make sense for competitive categories, agencies reporting to clients, or periods when you are actively making changes. Checking daily mostly shows normal answer variation rather than real progress.
Why does ChatGPT mention me sometimes but not always?
AI answers are not fixed. They vary with the exact wording of the question, location, time, personalisation and which pages the engine retrieves on that run. That is why a mention rate across repeated answers is more meaningful than any single result, good or bad.
Does a high AI visibility score guarantee customers?
No. A score summarises how visible you appear in the questions measured, using one tool's method. It cannot see every personalised answer and does not measure whether people contact or buy from you. Pair it with your own enquiry and sales data to judge real impact.
