You search for your own service in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews, and the answer lists three competitors and not you. It’s frustrating, and it’s also common. In most cases there is no single mysterious reason. There’s a short list of fixable problems that make it hard for AI systems to read, understand or trust your business.

This guide walks through those problems in the order we’d check them, how to spot each one on your own website, and what to do about it.

First, how AI assistants decide who to mention

No AI company publishes a ranking formula, so anyone who tells you exactly how ChatGPT picks businesses is guessing. What we do know from the companies’ own documentation is the basic mechanism. When an assistant answers a question that needs current information, it searches an index of web pages, reads the most relevant ones, and writes an answer, often with links to its sources. OpenAI, for example, runs a dedicated crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features.

That gives you three practical requirements:

  1. The engine must be able to read your site. If its crawler is blocked, you’re invisible to it.
  2. Your site must clearly say who you are, what you do and where. Vague pages are hard to match to a specific question.
  3. Other trusted sources should agree. Profiles, reviews, directories and articles that mention you make you a safer recommendation.

Reason 1: Your robots.txt blocks AI search crawlers

This is the most damaging problem and the easiest to miss. Some themes, security plugins and hosting templates add rules that block “AI bots” wholesale. The catch is that AI companies run different crawlers for different jobs:

  • Search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot, Bingbot) index pages for answers. Blocking these removes you from that engine’s results.
  • Training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot) collect content for model training. OpenAI and Anthropic both say blocking these does not remove you from their search features.

So “block GPTBot” is a legitimate choice, but “block OAI-SearchBot” quietly takes you out of ChatGPT search. Check yours in seconds with our free AI Crawler Checker, and read the full breakdown in how to allow AI crawlers in robots.txt.

Reason 2: Your homepage is set to noindex

A noindex robots meta tag asks search engines to drop the page from their index. It’s often left behind from a staging site. In WordPress, look under Settings → Reading for “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” and make sure it’s unchecked.

Reason 3: AI doesn’t know what your business actually is

Read your homepage as a stranger would. Does it say, in plain words, the business name, what you do, who it’s for and where? A surprising number of sites lead with a slogan (“Smiles that last”) and never state “ABC Dental is a family dental clinic in Islamabad”.

Then check whether you describe yourself in structured data. Organization or LocalBusiness markup states your name, URL, logo, contact details, address and profile links in a format machines read reliably. Our guide to Organization and LocalBusiness schema for AI search covers what to include, and the free AI Schema Generator writes the code for you.

Reason 4: You don’t answer the questions people ask

People ask assistants full questions: “Do dentists in Islamabad offer same-day appointments?”, “How much does a website audit cost?”. If your site never answers questions like these directly, there’s little for an AI to quote. Competitors with a clear FAQ section, service pages and pricing explanations give the engine something concrete to cite. See how to write FAQs that AI assistants quote.

Reason 5: Nobody else vouches for you

AI systems are cautious about recommending a business they can only learn about from the business itself. Profiles on trusted platforms, such as Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, review sites, industry directories and local press, act as corroboration. If your competitors are listed in places you aren’t, that’s a gap worth closing. We cover which ones matter in AI citation sources.

Reason 6 (local businesses): You never say where you are

For “best … in [city]” questions, location signals are decisive. Your site should name the cities you serve, show your address and phone, include LocalBusiness data and ideally have a page per location. More in local AI visibility.

What to fix first

Work in this order, because each step depends on the one before:

  1. Allow AI search crawlers and remove any noindex.
  2. Make your homepage say who, what and where; add Organization/LocalBusiness schema.
  3. Add an FAQ section with real customer questions.
  4. Claim and link your key profiles; close directory gaps your competitors have covered.
  5. Create location pages if you serve more than one area.

The Onxeera AI Visibility Fixer runs these checks on your live website, shows the evidence for each problem, prioritizes them, generates the fixes and lets you re-test. It won’t promise you a mention. Nobody honestly can. But it will tell you exactly what’s in the way.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay or submit my site to be mentioned by ChatGPT?

No. There is no submission form that guarantees a mention. What you can do is make sure ChatGPT search can crawl your site, that your business is clearly described, and that trusted sources confirm who you are.

How long until fixes show up in AI answers?

There is no fixed timeline. Crawling and re-indexing take time, and each engine updates differently. Fix the issues, re-test your site to confirm the fixes are live, and check AI answers again over the following weeks.

Is this different for Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews?

The details differ, but the foundations are shared: crawler access, a clear business entity, content that answers real questions, and corroboration from other trusted websites.
