AI Mentions vs AI Citations: What’s the Difference and Why You Need Both
A mention is when AI names your brand. A citation is when it links to your page as a source. Here is why they differ, how to track each and how to win more.

An AI mention is when an assistant names your brand in its answer. An AI citation is when it links to one of your pages as a source for that answer. You can have one without the other: a competitor’s review page can be cited in an answer that mentions you, and your guide can be cited in an answer that never says your name. Tracking both shows whether AI engines know you and trust your content.
Key takeaways
- Mention = your name in the answer text. Citation = your URL in the sources.
- Mentions build awareness; citations can bring visits and show source trust.
- The sources cited next to your competitors are the clearest to-do list you will get.
- Track both per prompt and per engine, over several runs.
What is an AI mention?
A mention is any time an AI answer names your business, product or person. “The best options in Austin are Brightside Dental, Lakeway Smiles and…” is a mention for each of those names. Mentions are what most people mean by “showing up in ChatGPT”.
Mentions can be:
- Recommended: you are suggested as a good choice.
- Neutral: you are listed or described without a judgement.
- Negative or wrong: you are named with a complaint or with incorrect facts. These need watching too; see AI reputation management.
What is an AI citation?
A citation is a source the engine shows with its answer: a numbered footnote in Perplexity, a source chip in ChatGPT search, a linked card in Google AI Overviews. It tells the reader “this is where the information came from”. When an engine cites your page, it is treating your content as evidence.
Citations only appear when an engine retrieves pages from the web while answering. An answer that comes purely from what the model learned in training usually has no citations at all.
Mentions vs citations at a glance
| AI mention | AI citation | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | In the answer text | In the list of sources or footnotes |
| What it signals | The engine knows and chose to name you | The engine trusts your page as evidence |
| Main benefit | Awareness, brand searches, shortlist placement | Clicks to your site, credibility |
| Driven mostly by | What many sources say about you | How useful and quotable your page is |
| Typical fix | Get mentioned on the sites engines cite | Answer questions clearly on your own pages |
The four combinations, and what each one tells you
- Mentioned and cited. The best case. Protect it: keep the cited page current and your facts consistent.
- Mentioned, not cited. Engines know you from other sources, such as directories or articles. Your own pages are not the evidence. Improve them with direct answers and facts. See how to write content AI assistants cite.
- Cited, not mentioned. Your content is useful but your brand is not the answer. Make your business clearer on those pages and add your own perspective, examples and data.
- Neither. Start with crawler access and clear facts, then look at which pages are cited for competitors. These are the usual causes.
Why the cited sources matter even when they are not yours
Every citation next to a competitor’s mention is a clue. If a “best accountants in Leeds” answer cites a local directory, a news roundup and a Reddit thread, those three pages are shaping who gets recommended. Getting listed or mentioned on them is often the fastest route into the answer. Our guide on which websites ChatGPT cites shows the common source types.
Worked example: one answer, broken down
Imagine someone asks Perplexity “best project management tool for small construction companies” and gets an answer naming four tools with six sources. Breaking it down:
| Item | What you record |
|---|---|
| Mentions | Tool A (1st), Tool B (2nd), your tool (3rd), Tool C (4th) |
| Citations | A software review site, two “best of” articles, a Reddit thread, Tool A’s website, your blog post on job scheduling |
| Third-party pages that mention you | Review site and Reddit thread: yes. Both “best of” articles: no |
| Your own page cited | Yes: the scheduling guide, used for one sentence of advice |
So you are both mentioned and cited, which is good. But the two “best of” articles list your competitors and not you. Those are your next two outreach targets, and they probably explain why you are third rather than first.
How to win more of each
To earn more mentions
- Get listed on the directories, review sites and roundups engines cite for your prompts.
- Make your positioning explicit: who you serve, where and for what.
- Keep your business facts identical across every profile.
To earn more citations
- Answer specific questions on your own pages in the first two or three sentences.
- Add facts that are hard to find elsewhere: prices, data, step-by-step methods, examples.
- Keep pages current and readable by AI search crawlers.

How to track AI mentions and citations
For each prompt and engine, record:
- Mentioned? (yes or no) and position in the answer
- Competitors named
- Every cited URL, and whether that page is yours
- For third-party sources: does the page mention you, a competitor, or neither?
Repeat each prompt more than once, because answers and sources change from run to run. The step-by-step method is in how to track your brand in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.
On Onxeera, the AI citation tracker follows your visibility over time from real audit results, Prompt Research stores the brands named and the sources cited for each answer, and Citation Builder checks each cited page to see whether it mentions you or only your competitors.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to be mentioned or cited by AI?
Both matter for different reasons. A mention puts your name in front of the person asking, which drives brand searches and trust. A citation can send a click to your site and shows the engine trusts your page as a source. The strongest position is being named in the answer and cited as a source for it.
Can I be cited without being mentioned?
Yes. An engine may use your article as a source for a general answer and link to it without naming your business in the text, for example when it quotes your statistics or a how-to step. This is common for publishers and businesses with strong guides.
Do AI citations count as backlinks?
Not in the SEO sense. A citation in an AI answer is a link shown to the user, not a link on a web page that search engines crawl. Its value is the visit and the trust signal to the reader, not link equity.
Which engines show citations?
Perplexity shows sources for almost every answer. ChatGPT shows sources when it searches the web. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode show linked sources, and Gemini and Claude show sources when they use web search. Answers from training data alone usually have no citations.
