AI SEO for small business means making sure AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot can reach your website, recognise your business, and find clear, trustworthy information about what you do and where. This 20-point checklist covers access, identity, content, local signals, reputation and measurement, with a quick way to check each item.
You do not need a big budget. Many items are quick, and most are things you should be doing for regular search anyway. Nothing here guarantees a mention, because no AI company publishes its ranking formula, but each step improves your odds and gives you something you can measure.
Access: can AI engines reach your site?
If AI search crawlers cannot fetch your pages, nothing else on this list matters.
- Allow the AI search crawlers. Make sure robots.txt does not block Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. How to check: run your domain through the free AI Crawler Checker.
- Understand what blocking training bots does. Blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended or CCBot does not remove you from AI search answers, but blocking Google-Extended can stop Gemini from using your content. How to check: read your robots.txt line by line and see our robots.txt guide.
- Get your key pages indexed. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on normal Search eligibility, and Copilot relies on Bing. How to check: look up your pages in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Put important facts in plain HTML text. Prices, hours and services shown only inside images or slow scripts are easy to miss. How to check: view the page source or disable JavaScript and see whether the text is still there.
Identity: do AI assistants know who you are?
AI engines need to match your website, profiles and mentions to one business. This is often called entity SEO.
- Use one consistent business name. Pick the exact name and use it everywhere, including legal suffixes if you use them. How to check: search your name and compare how it appears on your top listings.
- Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema. Use the most specific subtype you can, such as
Dentist,LegalServiceorRestaurant, with address, telephone, opening hours and area served. How to check: generate it with the free AI Schema Generator and confirm it matches the visible page. - Link your official profiles with sameAs. List your Google Business Profile, social accounts and major directory pages in your schema. How to check: each link should open a live profile for the same business.
- Publish a clear About page. Say what you do, who runs it, when you started and where you operate, in plain sentences. How to check: could a stranger describe your business correctly after reading it for a minute?
Content: is your site easy to quote?
AI assistants with web search retrieve pages and cite sources. Pages that answer questions directly are easier to use.
- Give each service its own page. “Teeth whitening in Austin” deserves its own URL, not one line on a list. How to check: list your main services and confirm each has a dedicated page.
- Start each page with a direct answer. Open with two or three sentences that say what you offer, for whom, where, and roughly what it costs. How to check: read only the first paragraph and see whether it answers the main question.
- Add FAQs written in customers’ words. Use questions you actually hear on the phone or by email. How to check: compare your FAQs with your inbox; see how to write FAQs AI assistants quote.
- Include specific, original details. Your prices or ranges, turnaround times, what is included, neighbourhoods you cover. How to check: highlight any sentence a competitor could copy word for word, then make it specific. Our guide on writing content AI assistants cite has examples.
- Show dates and authors. Add a “last updated” date and the person responsible for the page. How to check: open your top five pages and look for both.
Local: do AI engines know where you work?
Local business AI search questions often include a place: “best accountant in Dubai”, “plumber near Lahore cantonment”. See local AI visibility for “best service in city” questions for more.
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Category, hours, services, description, photos and website. How to check: view your profile as a customer and look for empty sections.
- Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Bing powers Copilot, and matching listings across Google, Bing and Apple help engines treat you as one business. How to check: search for your business in Bing Maps and Apple Maps.
- Match NAP everywhere. Name, address and phone should be identical on your site, profiles and directories. How to check: make a simple spreadsheet of your listings and compare each field.
- State your service area clearly. Name the cities, suburbs or districts you serve on your site and in
areaServed. How to check: search your site for each area name you want to be found for.
Reputation and citations: what do other sites say about you?
AI answers often lean on third-party sources such as directories, review sites and “best of” lists.
- Get listed where AI engines look. Find the directories and articles cited for your category and make sure you appear accurately. How to check: ask a few customer questions in Perplexity or ChatGPT and note the cited sources; our guide to citation sources and directories explains next steps.
- Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to them. Fresh, genuine reviews on the platforms your customers use give engines independent detail about your work. How to check: look at the date of your most recent reviews on each platform.
Measurement: are you showing up?
- Track the questions customers ask. Write down your top buying questions, ask them in several AI assistants on a schedule, and record whether you are named, who else is named, and which sources are cited. Also check that facts like your phone number and website are correct. How to check: compare results month to month; see how to measure AI visibility improvements.
Remember that answers vary by engine, wording, location, time and personalisation. One answer is a snapshot. Patterns across many answers are what you should act on.
What should you do first?
If you only have one afternoon, do these in order:
- Run the crawler check (item 1) and fix any blocks.
- Complete your Google Business Profile (item 14).
- Add LocalBusiness schema (item 6).
- Rewrite the first paragraph of your top three service pages (item 10).
- Ask five customer questions in two AI assistants and save the answers (item 20).
That gives you a baseline and removes the most common blockers. Work through the rest over the following weeks.
How Onxeera helps
Onxeera turns this checklist into a repeatable process. The AI Visibility Fixer scans your live site for crawler access, schema, entity details, FAQs, local signals and profiles, lists issues with evidence, generates fixes and lets you re-test to verify. Prompt Research asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude your customers’ questions through their official APIs with web search on, and shows where competitors are named and you are not. The two free tools above need no paid plan, and Onxeera also has a free plan, with paid plans on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
How long does AI SEO take for a small business?
There is no fixed timeline. Access fixes such as unblocking crawlers can take effect once engines recrawl your site, while reputation and citation work builds more slowly. Re-test the same customer questions regularly and compare results over weeks and months rather than expecting an overnight change.
Do I need an agency to get found in AI search?
Not necessarily. Most items on this checklist, like fixing robots.txt, completing your Google Business Profile, adding schema and rewriting service pages, can be done by an owner or a part-time marketer. An agency can help if you have many locations or little time.
Is AI SEO different from local SEO?
They overlap heavily. Consistent NAP, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews and clear service pages help both. AI SEO adds checks on AI crawler access, structured entity data, answer-first content, and testing real questions inside AI assistants to see whether you are named and cited.
Should I add an llms.txt file?
It is optional. llms.txt is a proposed standard, Google has said that Google Search does not use it, and other major AI search engines have not officially documented using it. It is low cost, so add one if you like, but treat it as a nice extra rather than a priority.
